Rituals have been part of black culture since the beginning of time. Our ancestors worked with the elements and connected with the sun, moon, and stars to bring forth manifestation, sustainability, and healing. The Dagara Tribe in West Africa often used spiritual practices such as communing with nature and using rituals to tap into the spiritual realm. The Yoruba practices encouraged prayers, spiritual dances, and connections with deities like Oshun and Ogun. Spirituality for black people has always been about connecting with the Earth. When we think of healing, we usually think of healing from a relationship or a hurtful friendship, but healing has layers, and the deeper we go, we learn that to heal. You must heal the race and culture. The more you heal and understand the culture, the more you can heal those hurtful relationships, friendships, and yourself, because it’s all connected and starts with the history of the culture.

“The retreat was an incredible experience that will stay with me for a lifetime. I don’t have opportunities to connect with other women of color due to the community I reside in, and left the retreat feeling part of a positive sisterhood. Each workshop allowed me to focus on myself and ways to heal or personal development. I wasn’t aware I needed this retreat as much as I did and am very happy I took the leap and attended.”

- Alexis Bromley

“This retreat saved my life, I can’t recommend it more highly, thank you enough.”

“My time at the retreat was a highlight during my ongoing personal wellness journey. I learned so much about alternative ways of self-care, connected with other amazing Black women, and had space for much needed introspective work in a beautiful, tropical setting. Also, the focus on keeping a vegan diet and being exposed to eco-friendly and sustainable ways of living helped make the entire experience even more fantastic for those of us who are thinking about or in the process of making major lifestyle changes. Pura vida!”

- Maya Wagner

“I feel that I was lead to this retreat for affirmation and direction from those who have traveled before me. I prepared myself mentally and physically with the expectation to find what I was seeking. I was surrounded by other black women on this same journey, but it was ultimately up to me how to accept and use the tools and information given to me. This retreat has definitely made me aware of the powers within me – love, beauty, acceptance, strength, peace, faith, hope, compassion, joy, sincerity, non judgmental, the power of self expression, the importance of “self care” and most of all – “pride in who I am”. I now have the knowledge and affirmation that I control my destiny and the assurance that God is always, always with me. I highly recommend the retreat to all Black women and I will always remember my experiences. The entire staff and Satya in particular are making a positive influence in the lives of others and may they be blessed in their quest to make this a better world not just for black women, but to all the people they touch.Peace and love to all my sisters.”

- Emma Duncan
