Mission Statement

Black Women Healing Retreats — the first retreat for Black women, and the first to place retreats on the global map—was born from the desire to reconnect Black women with nature, healing, and community.

While many have tried to imitate our path, we continue to lead with authenticity, innovation, and a rotating team of hand-selected experts. We provide a sanctuary of learning, nurturing, and transmutation—a space where Black women rediscover themselves outside of a society that tries to limit self-love and spiritual growth.

From daily yoga, meditation, and journaling to hiking waterfalls, spending time in rest and leisure, and enjoying the beautiful beaches of Costa Rica—every moment is designed to restore balance. Our workshops explore self-care, spirituality, and liberation, while our teachings move you through the chakras—from root to crown—so that you leave aligned in mind, body, and spirit.

BWHR is a retreat home for all Black women across the diaspora—embracing every background, status, and belief. We center not just on adventure and nature, but on the practice of softness and strength, inner peace, and community—backed by science, holistic practices, and wellness tools you can carry into everyday life.

Attend the retreat that will truly uplift and transform you — body, mind, and spirit.

IMPORTANT:

Note that Black Women Healing Retreats is NOT personal therapy or a detoxification program from recreational or pharmaceutical drugs.

If you have a history of PTSD, addiction or other mental health concerns, it is important that you arrive to our program in a stable state with the intention of using the retreat for self regulation, personal healing & spiritual growth.

During the retreat, you will spend a lot of time in silence, in nature, in meditation and with the practice of yoga. You will go on adventures and eat delicious nourishing food, you will also experience enrichment-educational workshops and you will be able to be completely open in this space of sisterhood. Workshops

Not Angry—Agitated: Reframing Depression and Expanding Care for Black Women Workshop

This workshop explores the often-misunderstood presentation of depression in Black women, with a specific focus on agitated depression and emotional masking. Through culturally grounded discussion, participants will examine the impact of misdiagnosis, cultural mistrust, and the Angry Black Woman stereotype on mental health outcomes. Attendees will leave with practical tools for emotional validation, identifying competent care, and overall healing for those who deal with depression.

Healing Through Shadow Work

In this workshop, you will explore Shadow Work. Many people assume spirituality is only about repeating phrases like “love and light,” but true spirituality requires acknowledging every part of yourself — including the darker, more hidden aspects. In today’s world, anything associated with being Black or Dark has often been framed as negative, causing people to disconnect from their real, authentic selves. But your shadows are not something to fear. They are some of the most potent and transformative parts of your inner world. When you begin integrating your shadows with your light in a healthy way, you create wholeness. And once you do that, your life naturally shifts for the better.

Embodying Your Femininity

In this workshop, you will lean deeper into your feminine energy. You’ll learn about femininity in all aspects — spiritual, emotional, and everyday life. You’ll explore what it means to embody feminine energy in a real, practical way so you can carry it into your daily routines and interactions.

Self-Care Beyond the Fluff: The Truth About Healthy Living and Self-Love

During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn and go deeper into wellness and the many ways you can take care of yourself. This includes the mind, body, and spirit. This is a very authentic workshop where we explore the truth and depth of what it means to heal and to prioritize self-love.

Healing After The Death Of A Loved One

In the face of someone's death, we sometimes slip into a state of silence, depression, and destruction, which can perpetuate internal suffering stemming from immense grief in response to the death of a loved one, someone you know, or even the thought of you or someone dying. In this workshop, you will be able to understand death, grief, and acceptance. Together you will discuss common notions about death and grief and journey into a death awareness meditation followed by a grief journaling exercise. In this workshop, you will dive into the shadow work of death and make space for grief by acknowledging its remarkable imminence, learning about grief response, ways to cope with grief, and transcending our perception of death and grief into acceptance.

Healing Through Healthy Eating: An Introduction to Plant Based Living & Veganism

Food is traditional and the idea of eating healthy and the reasons why are vital. Transitioning into a plant-based or vegan lifestyle will improve one's overall health. In this workshop, the women will learn about the junction of veganism and liberation. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of how to eat healthy in their day to day lives. This workshop has two parts: theory and practice.

Tap into the Ancient Power of Crystals

Gems have been around since the beginning of time, so by connecting to these stones we connect to our ancestors. In this workshop, you'll learn the ancient practice of tapping into the energy of gemstones, crystals, rocks, and minerals. The women will discuss the importance of crystals in ancient Egypt and their continued usage in modern times. An overview of common stones and their special properties. More specifically, the women will discuss the role of crystals in raising spiritual and emotional well being through explanation of the chakra energy system. Finally, the women will discuss how to use and care for crystals in your home and everyday life.

The Power of Ritual: Returning to Our Ancestral Ways

Rituals have been part of black culture since the beginning of time. Our ancestors worked with the elements and connected with the sun, moon, and stars to bring forth manifestation, sustainability, and healing. The Dagara Tribe in West Africa often used spiritual practices such as communing with nature and using rituals to tap into the spiritual realm. The Yoruba practices encouraged prayers, spiritual dances, and connections with deities like Oshun and Ogun. Spirituality for black people has always been about connecting with the Earth. In this workshop, the women will learn about different rituals and deities that our ancestors used that can still be used today.

Feedback

“The retreat was an incredible experience that will stay with me for a lifetime. I don’t have opportunities to connect with other Black women due to the community I reside in, and left the retreat feeling part of a positive sisterhood. Each workshop allowed me to focus on myself and ways to heal or personal development. I wasn’t aware I needed this retreat as much as I did and am very happy I took the leap and attended.”

- Alexis Bromley

“My time at the retreat was a highlight during my ongoing personal wellness journey. I learned so much about alternative ways of self-care, connected with other amazing Black women, and had space for much needed introspective work in a beautiful, tropical setting. Also, the focus on keeping a vegan diet and being exposed to eco-friendly and sustainable ways of living helped make the entire experience even more fantastic for those of us who are thinking about or in the process of making major lifestyle changes. Pura vida!”

Feedback

“I feel that I was lead to this retreat for affirmation and direction from those who have traveled before me. I prepared myself mentally and physically with the expectation to find what I was seeking. I was surrounded by other black women on this same journey, but it was ultimately up to me how to accept and use the tools and information given to me. This retreat has definitely made me aware of the powers within me – love, beauty, acceptance, strength, peace, faith, hope, compassion, joy, sincerity, non judgmental, the power of self expression, the importance of “self care” and most of all – “pride in who I am”. I now have the knowledge and affirmation that I control my destiny and the assurance that God is always, always with me. I highly recommend the retreat to all Black women and I will always remember my experiences. The entire staff and Satya in particular are making a positive influence in the lives of others and may they be blessed in their quest to make this a better world not just for black women, but to all the people they touch.Peace and love to all my sisters.”

- Emma Duncan
